My Design Process

This section shares the typical steps of my design process that have been successfully used for years to achieve the goals and results my clients are hiring me for.

Client: Fisher Price

Project: Butter Bean Package Design

THUMBNAILS: Thumbnails are typically the first phase in the design process. They allow me to quickly generate ideas focusing on an overall shape; inspired by the product/brand to give the client options.

ROUGH BLUELINES: After the thumbnails are reviewed the winning ideas are further refined into a rough blueline. This is where you can develop the structure more. Add product, branding, patterns etc. but still keep the sketch loose.

FINALS: The rough blueline can then be cleaned up to a finished blueline for clarity; which is often enough to communicate the idea. Sometimes a client may desire a color concept to add that wow factor when presenting to their audience.

Client: Mattel Inc.

Project: Barbie Extra Character Art Concepts

ROUGH BLUELINES: Packaging often needs to have dynamic character art to sell the magic of the toy. Clients will send me reference of the product and I start with either quick thumbnails or rough bluelines to capture the personality of the character.

CLEAN-UP: After the client reviews the rough blueline if they have any small revisions to the concept they are usually made in the clean-up phase. Revisions are a normal part of the design process and the client and I agree upfront how many “rounds of revisions” are appropriate for their project goals.

Color Final: A color concept was the final goal for this project. You can see how the concept is used as a guide for the final artwork on the package.

Client: Moose Toys

Project: Magic Mixie In-Store Display

THUMBNAILS: After discussing with the client the goals of the display; the branding and product are the inspiration for me to give a couple of quick thumbnail ideas. These thumbnails mainly focus on the best angle to communicate the display.

ROUGH BLUELINE: Once a direction is chosen by the client I render a rough blueline of the concept. Here a few revisions were given along with the green light to proceed.

FINAL COLOR CONCEPT: The rough blueline are then cleaned-up and colored for final presentation. These concepts are often used to share with vendors to sell the dream of how the products could be displayed in-store.
